GDS Vacancy Details 2026
India Post has invited applications for vacant BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak positions in different Circles and Divisions. The notification provides the vacancy format in Annexure-I, while the detailed division-wise vacancy position is to be made available on the GDS online portal.
Candidates should therefore check the portal for the available posts, offices, Post IDs, PIN codes, languages and Division-wise vacancies before submitting their preferences.
India Post GDS Educational Qualification
Candidates applying for GDS engagement must have passed the Secondary School Examination (10th standard) from a recognized Board of School Education conducted by the Government of India, State Governments or Union Territories.
The candidate must have passing marks in Mathematics and English.
The notification also states that candidates with an equivalent qualification from another board are not eligible under these provisions.
Local Language Requirement
The applicant must have studied the local language of the relevant post/Circle up to at least the 10th standard from a recognized board.
The prescribed local languages are given in Annexure-III of the notification. Special local-language provisions apply in certain states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Nagaland.

The age requirement for GDS posts is:

Other Qualifications Required for GDS
Apart from the 10th qualification and local-language requirement, candidates should have:
- Knowledge of computers
- Knowledge of cycling
- Adequate means of livelihood

Selected candidates will have to provide the required undertakings relating to computer knowledge, cycling and adequate means of livelihood at the time of engagement.
India Post GDS Salary / TRCA
GDS employees are paid through Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) along with applicable Dearness Allowance and other benefits.
The initial basic TRCA slabs mentioned in the notification are:

TRCA carries an annual increase of 3%, subject to the applicable conditions. GDS personnel may also receive other allowances and social-security benefits under the GDS Rules.
Important: GDS are not regular Central Government employees and their emoluments and entitlements are not at par with regular Central Government employees.
GDS BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak Job Profile
Branch Postmaster (BPM)
The BPM is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Branch Post Office and India Post Payments Bank-related operations. In single-handed Branch Post Offices, the BPM has overall responsibility for the smooth functioning of the office, including mail conveyance and delivery.
A selected BPM must also arrange suitable accommodation for running the Branch Post Office at their own cost and reside in the post village where the Branch Office operates.
Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)
The ABPM performs duties such as sale of stamps and stationery, mail delivery, IPPB transactions and assisting the BPM in postal operations.
Dak Sevak
Dak Sevaks may work in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices and Delivery Centres. Their duties can include handling and delivery of mail and parcels, postal transactions and assisting in the functioning of Post Offices.
India Post GDS Selection Process 2026
There is no written examination mentioned as the selection basis.
Applicants will be shortlisted through a system-generated merit list. The merit list is prepared using the marks obtained in the 10th standard Secondary School Examination, with the marks aggregated into a percentage accurate to four decimal places.
Tie-Breaking
If two or more candidates have the same merit, the notification provides a prescribed priority order beginning with date of birth/older age, followed by category and gender-related criteria.
GDS Application Fee
The application fee is ₹100 for the notified posts in the candidate’s chosen Division.
The fee is exempted for:
- All female applicants
- SC applicants
- ST applicants
- PwBD applicants
- Transwomen applicants
Fee-paying candidates can use available online payment methods, including Credit/Debit Card, Net Banking and UPI.

How to Apply for India Post GDS July 2026
Candidates should complete the application through the official GDS online engagement portal.
Step 1 – One-Time Registration
Create an account using an active mobile number and email ID and obtain the unique registration number.
Step 2 – Fill Application Form
Login using the registration number and password and enter the required personal and educational details.
Step 3 – Select Division and Post Preferences
The available Divisions and posts will depend on the candidate’s local language, Circle and available vacancies. Candidates can provide their post preferences in the prescribed manner.
Step 4 – Upload Photograph and Signature
Candidates need to upload their recent photograph and signature as prescribed.
Step 5 – Pay Fee
Pay the ₹100 application fee if applicable.
Step 6 – Final Submission
Check the preview carefully and submit the application before the deadline.
Only one registration is permitted per candidate. Duplicate or multiple registrations can result in cancellation of candidature.
Important Things to Remember
Candidates should enter their name, father’s name, mother’s name, date of birth and other details exactly as recorded in their 10th certificate. Incorrect information can result in cancellation.
The Department has provided a two-day correction window after the application period. However, candidates should carefully check their application before final submission because corrections are not permitted after the correction window closes.
Candidates are also advised to apply well before the closing date rather than waiting until the last day because heavy website traffic may cause login or submission problems.
